1960’s Gingham Dress

This week’s shop update is mostly tops, except for the 1960’s dress above. We’re still figuring out lighting, so you’ll have to forgive us for how inconsistent it is while we learn!

The weather is still incredibly cold in Toronto, so we’ll be staying in all weekend coming up with some good posts for you next week. I hope everyone has a lovely weekend!

Home Sweet Home / Kira

kira2

I am constantly in awe of my friends and the unique ways in which they decorate their apartments. I love finally being at an age where people actually take pride in their homes and you can feel their personality radiating throughout.

Kira’s apartment is no exception. She has one of those homes that you envy because it constantly smells like you walked into a cloud of vanilla and angels and cleanliness. You can distinctly see a part of Kira in her home. She decorates in a minimalist way that is both endearing and effortlessly simple (in the best way possible). It’s totally her, and I love it.

Thanks to Kira and Vader for sharing their home with us!!!

Ellen Rogers – Folies à Deux

ellenrogers_folie-à-deux_140910_584

Anyone who followed my old blog, Fern & Rolland, has already heard me talk about how much I love Ellen Rogers and her ability to make me feel like I’m seeing a ghost.

I love the idea of things being haunted, and my morbid side is always pretty drawn to things that are eery and old looking for that very reason. Unfortunately, no matter how hard I try, I can’t make myself believe in ghosts.  I’m always looking for weird spots in photos and trying to make myself believe that they’re orbs or spirits of some kind  (like the time I visited Faulkner’s home in Mississippi a few years back and told everyone that the white spot in all my photos was Faulkner’s ghost!), but it always turns out that my camera lens is just smudged or dirty.

Ellen Rogers‘ photos, though, are haunting, and creepy in the best way possible. They remind me of sneaking into cemeteries and abandoned buildings at night, and of finding old, faded photographs in an attic. I also love that all of her work is analogue.

This particular series, called Folies à Deux, is especially good, to me, because it reminds me of Angela Carter’s novel Wise Children, which has always been one of my favorites. I’ve never been very good at writing a concise summary of a story, so I’ll spare you the pain of watching me try, and leave that to the novel’s Wikipedia entry. What I will say, is that the carnival style costumes, and the way the photos feel like they’re from a different era, evoke the same bitterly nostalgic, sort of mourning-of-the-past tone of Carter’s novel. Not to mention the fact that they play right into my ongoing obsession with old french accordion music, and 1930’s traveling carnivals.

Austin, Tx – Part 3

dtaustin1

On our third and final day in Austin, we tried to cram in as much sight seeing as possible before we had to drive back to the air port to catch our flight. We had talked about seeing the Barton Springs pretty much the entire time we were in Austin. The Barton Springs is a set of 4 natural water springs located in Zilker Park, where they have a man-made swimming pool that is filled with water from the main spring. It really is a beautiful sight, and had it not been under construction, or incredibly chilly, I would have loved to jump in!

During our trip, Matt kept saying he thought pretty much everywhere we went had been a place where they filmed a scene of Dazed and Confused. Although, I think in this case, he was correct. They did film a scene at one of Austin’s many Moonlight Towers, which was indeed located in Zilker Park. Pretty neat!

One thing I truly did love about Austin, and I can say this about several cities in the States, is that they have these adorably coloured houses. We would drive down entire streets, each house being totally unique in colour and style. I’d point to almost every house and notify Matt that I would like to live there. If I had taken a picture of every house I liked, there would probably be 100 photos to share. So we only took a few.

That’s about it for Austin! I would love to go back during the warmer months to really experience all the city has to offer, in terms of outdoor recreation. I really didn’t expect it to be as chilly as it was, and I definitely did not pack my suitcase with that in mind, hence the re-occurence of my big wool cardigan.

I hope you all had a lovely weekend. I spent most of my time putting the final touches on my apartment, which had been taking a back seat for the last few weeks. Feels nice to walk into my home with my frames on the walls, rather than on the floor.
