Outfit: Wet Hot Canadian Summer

Larkspur Vintage | Outfit: Wet Hot Canadian SummerLarkspur Vintage | Outfit: Wet Hot Canadian SummerHas anyone else watched the Netflix series Wet Hot American Summer: First Day Of Camp?! It is a prequel to the movie Wet Hot American Summer, which is one of my all-time favourites and holds a dear place in my heart (there are a lot of comedic movies and shows that hold a dear place in my heart because I would watch them with Kristen and cry laugh at everything and then we would constantly make jokes about them, even still to this day). So you can imagine my excitement when I turned on Netflix and was like “WHAT IS THIS?!?!”. I watched all 8 episodes in one sitting because I could not stop and it must have really got burned into my brain because after I shot these and sat down to colour correct them, I noticed how reminiscent this styling was of the movie and show; likely an outfit that Elizabeth Banks’ character would wear. Although the movie is based in 1981, the style of this time still identifies as 70s and hadn’t quite made it’s way to the awful 80s style we all know. It fits right in to this 70s obsession I am having lately, which I really don’t feel like I’m purposely doing, but I guess when the 70s is very on trend in fashion, and you watch shows based in the 70s (okay, close to it) and you listen to Fleetwood Mac non-stop, it is inevitable that your own style will reflect that.

Let me know if you watched the show because I love talking about funny shit. Also, let me know in the comments below what your favourite style era is.

Outfit / Muumuu Madness

Larkspur Vintage | Outfit: Muumuu MadnessLarkspur Vintage | Outfit: Muumuu MadnessIn the summer, there is probably nothing comfier than a light-weight maxi dress; it feels like leaving the house in a nightgown. If you are a gal like me (or heck, even a guy) who likes wearing dresses the majority of the time, it’s perfect for those warm, yet windy days so no undie flashes occur, or for times sat in the park, so again, we have no concern about our underthings. This particular vintage number caught my eye for the pattern and colours, and while it read size large on the tag, I felt as though that was not the true sizing, so I gave it a whirl regardless and it fit just the way I wanted; a little form fitting, but still quite loose and airy. I lovingly call this dress my muumuu, which I supposed is not a traditional muumuu at all, but The Simpsons sort of made muumuus a joke for me, so anything long and loose immediately becomes a muumuu in my eyes (how many times can I say muumuu in one sentence?!) The other reason I’m particularly fond of this guy – if I’m being totally candid and honest here – is I’ve been feeling a little self-conscious about my body lately, which is really and truly a new feeling for me (maybe I’ll write a more lengthy post about that at some point), so this dress is the type that feels nice to wear on days when your silly thoughts and negative self-image are getting the best of you.

Collection / Gucci Resort 2016

Gucci Resort 2016Sometimes a collection comes along, and it stops you dead in your tracks. Such is the case for me with Gucci Resort 2016. It seems retro-inspired looks are making a comeback, and not just in smaller, independent labels. Big wigs like Gucci are letting their retro freak flag fly high, and I’m pretty excited about it. The distinct 60/70s influence, with bold patterns and vintage silhouettes are clearly what drew me to the whole collection initially, but when I looked closely, what I really loved the most were the matching sets. I am not joking when I say I could wear matching sets every single day. So I get pretty damn excited when I see brands producing items that are so flippin’ hard to find vintage. Not that I could afford Gucci, I never could, obviously. But you know that smaller brands and shops will be reproducing knockoffs of looks similar to this, and that, I can afford.

What do you guys think of the collection? Loving it? Hating it?Gucci Resort 2016Gucci Resort 2016Gucci Resort 2016Gucci Resort 2016Gucci Resort 2016Gucci Resort 2016Gucci Resort 2016Gucci Resort 2016Gucci Resort 2016Gucci Resort 2016Gucci Resort 2016Gucci Resort 2016Gucci Resort 2016Gucci Resort 2016

Incandescent

s_7_1024x1024Brooklyn based retail store Swords Smith just released this stunning editorial shot by Hannah Metz and styled/modeled by Emily Theobald, which I happened upon because I follow both these ladies on instagram and originally their respective blogs (that are now sort of defunct). I have such respect for both these women and their talents. I pretty much love anything either of them produce, and this editorial is no exception. The styling is so on point, which doesn’t surprise me because Emily is one of my favourite stylists – she can adapt to any style seamlessly while remaining true to her vision. It’s always an added bonus when she models her looks as well because she is one of the most photogenic women, ever. As for Hannah, she has been a long time favourite of mine, both for her sartorial choices and her photography. This particular editorial feels different from any work I have seen of hers and just like Emily, proves her ability adapt to any style that comes her way. The white background mixed with bright patterns and lush colours is what sold me straight away. The whole vibe feels very 70s psychedelic while remaining modern, easy going and totally in line with today’s trends. Love love love.

Them Jeans

If you had told me a year ago that I would purchase a pair of high waisted flared denim jeans, I would have laughed in your face. Yet, here I am, with a pair of high waisted flared jeans, and I’m loving them. When I bought them, I wasn’t really sure if it would end up being a wasteful purchase. I have a tendency to want to try new styles, only to find I feel totally uncomfortable and never end up wearing them. This is usually only the case with pants. It’s really just personal insecurities that make me dislike pants – my legs are too short, they look thick in pants (or in my own candid words, like sausages), I feel too masculine…silly things really. It’s not that these pants don’t make me feel that way…they still do at times, but I like them regardless, because they feel vintage, because they are so flippin versatile, because I can style them in a truly feminine way and because not having too worry about your dress/skirt blowing up in the wind is an amazing feeling. You probably won’t catch me wearing pants all the time, I’m still a dress/skirt girl to the very end (ride or die), but I like that I’m stepping out of my comfort zone and giving a little nod to the 70s, and an even bigger nod to Bridgitte Bardot with this hairstyle and oversized bow tie.
