Etsy How-To: Designing a logo and Olivia Mew

Once Meaghan and I came up with the name for our blog/shop, we spent a lot of time trying to work out the details of what we wanted our logo to look like. Anything I’ve ever read about business (which isn’t much) talks about the importance of branding, and as two girls who are clueless when it comes to design, we knew we’d have to ask someone for help if we wanted a look we were happy with.

We began brainstorming what sort of design we both liked and what we both definitely did not like. At the beginning we didn’t really think about an illustrator. We originally went with a graphic designer. But after seeing the first draft of our logo – which was to the T what we had asked for – we both decided we didn’t exactly think the whole thing through enough, and it wasn’t the look we were going for. After much more brainstorming and much more internet browsing, we both agreed upon using an illustrator. Lucky enough, Meaghan is quite good friends with amazing illustrator, Olivia Mew. And within a few weeks our logo was born!

Olivia Mew is not only an amazing illustrator, she is also a successful vintage seller on Etsy and if that is not enough, she is the founder of Stay Home Club. Stay Home Club is an online shop selling illustrated textiles, designed by herself and various artists. Having a logo that you are happy with and you feel represents your brand well, we feel, is an important part of the whole process.

We’re really so very excited to get our Etsy shop up and running, but there are still a few last details we want to take care of before we’re ready to launch. Once we get all of that figured out, you can be expecting weekly shop updates every Thursday, which we’ll be posting to the blog too. In the mean time, though, we thought we’d give you a little glimpse into the work we’re doing, and the steps we’re taking to make sure it opens on the right foot! So for the coming weeks, expect some Etsy “how-to” posts (from one beginner to another) that might give anyone who is interested in the world of online vintage retail an idea of what sorts of steps to take to get started.
