There’s little more that makes me as happy as hiking does; give me some good pals, beautiful weather, scenic views and a camera, and you can be certain I’ll be in good spirits (obnoxiously singing to vocalize my joy, no doubt). This past weekend Zach and I decided to do just that, and headed for Hamilton to see some of his best pals, Nick, Jesse and Emma (but she was away), their ridiculously adorable daughter Dorothy. I don’t visit Hamilton much, but I think it’s well worth the trip every so often – aside from the lovely people who reside there – just for the views. Dundas Peak is stunning year round, but particularly so in Autumn with it’s colourful, changing leaves. We didn’t make it all the way to the peak, but what we did see was enough to leave me satisfied (that’s what she said).

Photo Diary: Marmora Mine

Im still surprised to learn of stunning places scattered around Ontario. I shouldn’t really be at this point, there are many parts of Ontario that have surprised me time and again, that honestly, I should just come to expect hidden treasures all over this province. Marmora Mine was no exception. It was vast and overwhelming in the best possible way. It felt like a visual reminder of how small we really are on this planet. Looking down upon a mine turned quarry with the most beautiful crystal blue water it brought this song lyric to mind “Oceans never listened to us anyway.” – a little reminder that we belong to nature and it’s elements.

The pit stretches more than 656 Ft deep and covers 85 acres of surface. Despite the fence surrounding the pit and the many signs indicating no trespassing, we went ahead and hopped the fence anyway (I in now way am recommending this. You may get caught and get in shit.) We hiked our way down the often very rocky terrain to water level and found an area that had a bit of surface to touch so we (I) could ease our (my) way into the water. Not far off from where we stood the ground drops off and you are left with hundreds upon hundreds of feet between you and ground level. The thought of that terrified me to the point that I refused to swim out passed the shore we stood on. Zach persuaded me to swim out with him for a moment, but once I actually did it I pretty much threw a fit as if I had no idea how to swim and he was holding me like an infant trying to ease my momentary insanity with his calmness….ya, drama queen is right. But aside from my clearly irrational fear of water depths, it was the most perfect way to spend my 28th birthday. We had a massive quarry all to ourselves, blue skies, a beautifully warm day, and I got to spend it with one of the best people I know and my favourite walking cloud dog guy. I am lucky in this life, I forget that all too often, but I really am.

Photo Diary: Cabin in Schomberg, Ontario

Larkspur Vintage | Photo Diary: Cabin in Schomberg, OntarioLarkspur Vintage | Photo Diary: Cabin in Schomberg, OntarioLarkspur Vintage | Photo Diary: Cabin in Schomberg, OntarioLarkspur Vintage | Photo Diary: Cabin in Schomberg, OntarioAs I mentioned in my last post, Zach and I headed to Schomberg, Ontario to spend a night in a cabin for a work project. It was a very short lived trip, but a fun trip no less. When we arrived on the property a friendly woman, Emma (and her flippin’ awesome border collie Cree who goes wild whenever a car starts up and loves running all over their property), greeted us at her home and brought us down to the cabin on her family owned farm land. They had built 3 cabins on the land, all a considerable distance from eachother, to rent out on Airbnb. The cabins have no running water or electricity, only solar powered lighting and heating from the fireplace, and a pond directly in front of it, now frozen over making the perfect skating rink (had we brought skates). The cabin was quaint and secluded – you could hear the coyotes howling come nightfall – and absolutely perfect for a wintry getaway. Once we settled in we got straight to photo taking as there was only a few hours of viable light left and that was pretty well the main reason we were there (Zach is a photographer by profession, and a flippin’ talented one at that). The rest of the evening was spent getting food in the town (oops, we brought no food with us), playing scrabble, warming my cold toes by the fire, worrying a coyote would steal Gus at night while he was peeing and watching Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix on a laptop (we are re-watching all the movies). In the morning we rose, packed our things and headed back to real life. Like I said, very short lived, but it was great and being in a place like that always makes me wonder if that is the sort of spot I will end up when I am older. I was going to split this into two posts because there are so many photos, but personally, I don’t mind when a post is picture heavy, so hopefully you don’t either.

Btw, this is not a sponsored post, I just really enjoyed our stay and the owners (and Cree). Also, if you have concerns about Gus being up so high on the wooden beam – he was up there only for a second for a photo, Zach was holding him the whole time, and he was in no way distressed. He is very easy going and very loved.
