Uptights

DSC_0720I have unearthed most of my tights now. It’s sort of a bittersweet feeling. I love Fall weather and dressing myself for the chilly months, but I kind of dislike wearing tights, which is a necessity when you wear dresses/skirts as often as I do. If I could wear bare legs all year round that would be ideal. However, I’m a big fan of white tights, which came about I think only last year. But I don’t much care for black tights, which seems to be the preferred choice of most. With the exception of wearing black shoes with black tights, I find they tend to cut off my legs instead of elongating them, and it makes it very hard for me to see anything but that. I don’t know when I started to notice that, because I used to wear black tights almost religiously. I struggled with this outfit and forcing myself not to just throw on my white tights, as I usually do. But I don’t totally dislike the look. It’s good to force yourself to try different things, and realize maybe the things you notice are only in your head, and others don’t necessarily see or share the same qualms. So, hey black tights, hopefully we’ll become better friends this year.

Daydream Manor

tumblr_nc0vhq5Typ1rn6caco9_500I was going to share an entirely (very) different collection today, but then I happened to browse Samantha Pleet’s new website and saw these images that I had seen behind-the-scenes of on instagram several months ago. Needless to say I got excited and decided to share it instead of what I had planned for today. But that is no surprise here. I am a long time fan of Samantha, everything she does, and the people she surrounds herself with. I liken her and the work/garments she produces to something of a enchanted-goddess-superhuman-angel. As you can see, when I like things, I tend to gush over them, like a lot, to an excessive point. But in all seriousness, her work and garments feel very otherworldly to me, and that’s probably why I like it so much, and will continue to enjoy them for years to come, I hope.

Betty Magazine / Amber, India, Hannah

amber_byrne_mahoney_india_salvor_menuez_betty_magazine_summer_editorial_new_york_fashion_photography_polaroid_beach_wanderlust_dreamy_001This is going to be a short and sweet one this week because I think I have already talked about these three women endlessly (Amber Mahoney, India Menuez and Hannah Metz, for those of you confused), and how much I love them, and when they collaborate and create together, it’s like magic to my eyes and soul. I happened upon a few images from this editorial for Betty Magazine through instagram (as usual) a few weeks ago. I knew immediately it would be an editorial I would want to share. The aesthetic makes perfect sense to me, and is probably exactly how I would style a shoot. I could go on and on, but let’s just allow the images to speak for themselves, shall we?

Lover of the light

DSC_2494

“Whether we act, or don’t act, voila, miraculously, without exception, things turn out exactly the way they do.”

I read that quote years ago in The Second Book of the Tao, and it is one that has stuck with me over the last 6 years. There is something wonderful about reading a phrase that can resonate so wholly with you, that you just never forget it. Over the years I have found myself floundering between really understanding that sentence, and confused by it’s meaning. But the beautiful thing about Taoism is that if you try too hard to understand, then you understand nothing. I guess all there is to know is that it makes me feel at peace with myself and my life. We can try, or we can not try, either way, things will be the way they are.

Keep On Walking

DSC_1254

It was such a beautiful weekend filled with friends, good food, and time well spent outdoors. Whatever little bit of warmth mother nature will give us, we shall receive with open arms. Because of my surgery, lack of sun and a never ending bitter chill in the air, I’ve been finding it hard to motivate myself to do anything other than sit on my couch with one of my many antique tea pots and episode after episode of Friday Night Lights (insert Nashville, New Girl, Girls, The Mindy Project). This is not natural for me…it’s not the sort of thing that keeps me happy (although those shows are amazing!!!) So it doesn’t hurt that one of my best friends (well two) is (are) the brains behind The Vacant North and can remind me that while winter can feel like the enemy, and the wind can deter us from leaving our nests (which is sometimes totally reasonable! i don’t want frostbite), if weather permits, hiking and exploring can be just as invigorating and fulfilling with snow on the ground (and ice water in your boots).

When I first got my Samantha Pleet Blixen Boots I told myself I would never wear them in the snow, and I would keep them in impeccable condition. But the snow came, and day after day I’d lace them onto my feet because there was no other boot I really wanted to wear. And after some time I realized I would rather have them come along on adventures with me. Why not let them live?!  Afterall, I feel Samantha Pleet always depicts strong, beautiful, adventurous women in her clothing and shoe designs, so it makes sense that outdoors and in nature is where they are mean’t to be.
