Done it Yourselfs

Disclaimer:

This is a bit of a cop out post. Alex and I started this blog with the intention of doing weekly crafts and projects, which we would photograph and share with you guys. We’ve been horrible at it so far – and most of our do-it-yourself ideas either never get done, or we forget to take pictures!! These are four crafts/projects we’ve actually made in the last few months – most of them as gifts for people – which we were silly enough not to document. All of these photos are stolen off Pinterest. We promise to try to be better at this!!!!

1. The Air Fern Terrarium

What you’ll need:

  • Any kind of glass receptacle with an opening
  • Air Ferns
  • Earth or rocks of any kind

Optional:

  • Moss
  • Shells
  • Any other decoration you’d like
  • Tweezers or chopsticks in the case of a small opening

This project is ridiculously straight forward – fill the bottom of the receptacle with rocks or earth (or both) and put your decorations and air ferns inside. Check with the person you buy the air ferns from on what they recommend in terms of plant care.

2. The Mason Jar soap Dispenser

What You’ll Need:

  • A mason jar with a double piece lid
  • A pump of any kind (I took one from a dollar store soap dispenser
  • Liquid soap
  • A drill or hammer and screw driver

Easy peezy – Just drill or hammer a hole through the flat part of the mason jar lid, just large enough for the pump to fit through, then, fill the mason jar with liquid hand soap/dish detergent/etc., and screw the flat lid on with the pump in it! Done!

3. Homemade sugar scrubs

What You’ll Need:

  • Granulated sugar
  • Coconut Oil or Olive Oil
  • Mason jars or any container with a seal

Optional:

  • Essential Oils (for a scented sugar scrub)

This can literally be as easy as putting some melted coconut oil (or olive oil) in a mason jar and pouring sugar in until it becomes like a paste. You can add in essential oils to make it smell delicious – but when you’re using coconut oil, it already kind of does! Use it in the shower to scrub off all your dry, dead, Winter skin.

4. Snow Globes

What You’ll Need:

  • A Mason Jar
  • Water
  • Glycerin (though we’ve heard vegetable oil works as well)

Optional:

  • Glitter
  • Plastic animals or trees
  • Any other decoration you’d like to include
  • Twine or ribbon to decorate the base
  • etc.

This one  may be a little out of season – but you can actually make really pretty glittery snow globes that don’t necessarily need to be Christmas-y. Fill your jar with half water/half glycerin. Put some glitter or sequins or fake snow in, and glue your little figuring friends to the inside of the flat part of the mason jar top. Put the lid on, and screw it on tight. Now shake it all up!

Chloë Sevigny for Opening Ceremony Fall’13

chloe1

Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony Fall’13 Collection is a pretty fun and spirited one. Inspired by youthquakers in the 1960’s, it’s filled with some Twiggy-esque shift dresses and pastel swing coats, all with a hint of 90’s vibes – the maxi dress, head scarves and platform shoes. I’m totally in love with the highwaisted houndstooth trousers, and if I wore pants more often, I think these would be the pair I would never remove from my gams! I have not been entirely impressed by Chloe’s past few collections for OC, but she seems to have returned with this one. And I am always pleased to see her modelling her own designs. No matter how old she gets, she always seems to be the voice of youthfulness, which I find endearing and lovable.

Oh the weather outside is weather

DSC_0874

We were hit with another snowfall this weekend, which meant a lot of indoor time spent with my recuperating dog, friends and Matt. You’d think because I grew up in Ottawa I would be used to an abundance of snow and sub zero temperatures and I would be able to brave this weather, but I am a wimp. Going outdoors at this point is mostly meant for getting from one location to another. In my case, dance rehearsals and eating pho mostly. I have a dance show coming up March 16th, called Pandora’s Box, in which I will be performing the role of Pandora. If you are in Toronto, you should definitely come see it. There is such great talent  here, and I feel so lucky to be dancing beside such wonderful and inspiring people.

It is Family Day today, which means no work for Meg and I. Although, we have been keeping busy with steaming clothes and taking photos of some new items for our shop this week. We have some pretty cute Easter dresses to share, so keep an eye out.

Sorry about the slight delay in this week’s shop update, but here it is, as promised! We’ll slowly be transitioning into Spring in the next few weeks – maybe a little optimistic, but why not!

Silent Blog Days

We’re sorry for how quiet it’s been around here. I’ve been mostly just coming home from work and holing up under blankets to try to fight off this never ending cold, and Alex has been crazy busy with work and dance things. We meant to have a shop update for you this afternoon, but a couple of technical difficulties set us back a tiny bit. We’ll have a new batch of items in the shop by tomorrow evening, we promise!

In the mean time, I’m getting excited to dive into this Pierre Berton book about the building of the Canadian railroad. I’ve been feeling pretty guilty lately about how little I know about my own country’s history, so when my boss – who is a big Canadian history geek, in the best way – recommended I get into this author, I got right on it.

You’ll have to bear with me for the next few weeks (or months) while I go off on long tangents about things I’m learning!

Hope everyone has a nice long (for most of us) weekend!
