It’s officially Winter in Toronto

photo 1(5)

There isn’t much news around here, it’s been fairly quiet since we got back from Christmas holidays. We spent all day Saturday finalizing Etsy listings and getting ourselves ready for the opening this Thursday (don’t forget to enter the giveaway here!!!). We did manage to take a quick break to stand outside in the snow and take some blog pics, though! So, here they are!

Alex is flying off on a really exciting New Years trip with Matt tonight, which she’ll be telling you all about next week, and I’ll be spending New Years Eve indoors with a lot of pets and close friends.

We hope you all have a wonderful night – see you in the New Year!

Remember the Night (1940)

remember-the-night

I tend to spend the better part of the month leading up to Christmas, getting myself excited about it by watching as many holiday movies as I can. This year, I didn’t have much time to spend watching my favorites because I was moving, and working full time, and making sure we’re all set for our upcoming shop launch (!!!), so, when I got to my parents house last night, I was happier than ever to sit on their couch and drink wine and watch movies that make me feel festive!

Most of my favorite old movies are Barbra Stanwyck movies, but that happens to be extra true around this time of year. Last night, my parents and I watched Christmas in Connecticut, which is way at the top of my list, but I’m saving my all time favorite for tonight.

Remember the Night is a perfect example of what I love about Barbra; she’s scamp-y and mischievous and an all around trouble-maker, and I love it. Her character, in this movie, gets caught shop lifting, and her prosecutor feels so bad for her being in prison on Christmas that he posts her bail and takes her to his Mother’s place for the holidays. The movie has just the right amount of holiday season sentimentality, but really the best part is watching Stanwyck get up to her tricks.

She happens to be TCM’s star of the month this month, which means they’ve been playing a ton of her movies! (I realize the month of December is almost over….I’m a little late on posting this).

Home for the holidays

TBM12

I am currently spending the holidays at my parent’s home in Ottawa, ON. I always look forward to this time of year, not only for the fridge stocked full of foods, but being able to spend time with my family. That has really become something special to me – now that I have lived in Toronto for the last 5 years. Ottawa to Toronto really isn’t that far of a distance, but you would be surprised to know how difficult it truly is to find time to see each other. I always enjoy coming home to see my brothers and our 3 family dogs, decorating the tree with my mom, watching old Christmas movies and baking (also eating) delicious treats – this year we are making a real red velvet cake, with beets and all, and a pumpkin dump cake (it is not quite clear to me what this is yet).

My mom had heard about the Tin Barn Market, and asked me if I would come with her to check it out. The Tin Barn Market is a pop-up shop located in the small town of Almonte, about 1 hr outside Ottawa. Originally, it was only opened from November-December for the holiday season, but this year they had opened for the summer and decided to extend their shop until, well, now. They sell antiques, but focus mostly on re-worked and re-purposed antique/vintage housewares. I probably got my love for antiques from my parents, as they get just as excited about these things as I do. It’s nice to share something like that with them. We ended buying quite a few things, which I think will be nice additions to our homes.

After the Tin Barn Market, we took a little stroll around Almonte. It is a historical town, with a lot of it’s original buildings still standing. They have been turned into modern restaurants and banks, but their exteriors still look to be in their original condition. We checked out the falls by the old mill, and I of course had to check out some of the downtown vintage stores. There is always something wonderful about small town vintage stores, not as many hands have picked through the racks, so you can always be sure to find something pretty great.

I hope you are all enjoying the holidays. It may be a little quiet around for the week as both Meg and I are spending what little time we have with our families until we return back to the much warmer city of Toronto. We are however, both very excited  to share our Larkspur Winter Vintage ’13 photoshoot with you all this coming Thursday. So be sure to check back.

Happy Holidays!!!

Larkspur lookbook sneak peek

Larkspur 9241

We’re just a couple of weeks away from the official opening of our Etsy shop, and we’re getting really excited about it. On Monday, Kira had us all over to her studio to shoot our first lookbook, which we’ll be launching next Thursday – along with a giveaway!! In the meantime, here are a couple of “behind-the-scenes” pictures I took (mostly with my phone -except for the first and last ones, which Kira took).  See if you can figure out what theme we ended up going with.
