Larkspur Vintage

We’re really so very excited to get our Etsy shop up and running, but there are still a few last details we want to take care of before we’re ready to launch. Once we get all of that figured out, you can be expecting weekly shop updates every Thursday, which we’ll be posting to the blog too. In the mean time, though, we thought we’d give you a little glimpse into the work we’re doing, and the steps we’re taking to make sure it opens on the right foot! So for the coming weeks, expect some Etsy “how-to” posts (from one beginner to another) that might give anyone who is interested in the world of online vintage retail an idea of what sorts of steps to take to get started.

For today, you can sneak a peek at some of the things coming to the store soon. (Excuse the photo quality, a new camera is on our list!)

DIY Bath Salts (the legal kind)

Recently, it was my friend Kira‘s birthday. I decided I would make some bath salts as a gift for her. I thought I’d share with you guys a little tutorial on how to make these. It’s a super fast and easy gift to make, and with the amount of salts I have now, I could probably make jars and jars and jars of bath salts for myself.

What you’ll need:

Epsom Salts
Sea Salt
an Essential Oil (I chose Juniper)
Food Coloring
Bowl (preferably something metal, so it doesn’t stain)
Spoon
Jar of any kind (I used a mason jar)

First step is to measure out how much Epsom and Sea Salts you will need to fit in the jar you have chosen. I did about 1/4 Sea Salt and the rest Epsom Salt. It’s up to you how much of each you would like. I would do no more than 1/2 Sea Salt, it does not take food colouring as well as Epsom Salt, so that is always something to consider.

After measuring your salts, pour into your bowl. I decided I wanted to do tricolour bath salts of Red White and Blue (Kira loves the USA). So I did each 1/3 separately.  I didn’t need any colouring for the white 1/3, so I left that for after. I added about 5 drops of blue, and the same for the red. You can eye it out yourself though, depending on how dark (or light) you would like them. After stirring the salts well – so the colour spreads over all the salts – I added a few drops of Juniper Essential Oil. To each separate 1/3 I added about 2-3 drops. Essential Oils are very strong! So try not to over do it. In this case, less is more.

Once you have finished all the stirring, oil adding and colour, you can leave the salts out to dry. I put them on tin foil because that is all I had at the time, but a baking sheet would work just as well. Let them dry for about 2 hrs. I suggest putting them in a different room than the one you are in, or near a window. I had them in the Livingroom, but the smell became so overwhelming I had to move them into the Bedroom by a window.

When they have dried you can pour them into your jar – I made the tin foil into a kind of funnel so I could pour it easily into the jar with no mess. You can also add some decorative things to the jar if you want. After pouring the salts into my jar I decided it needed something else , so I wrapped some twine and tied it into a bow at the top of the jar to make it a little more cute looking.

And voila! All done!

Quick, easy and will make baths even more enjoyable.

-Alex

[Editor’s note: A few people have asked where you can get some of the ingredients, so I thought I would include them in the post. You can purchase Epsom and Bath Salts at any drug store. I got the Essential Oil at a health food store. Food coloring is from the grocery store. Mason jars can be found at Zellers, Walmart etc. In this case I got my mason jar at a vintage clothing store that sells some house wares and antique furniture. Hope that helps!]

Twenty Seven Names

Lately I’ve been really drawn to plainer outfits, maybe a little less frilly, and a little on the darker side. Maybe it’s just the season, or maybe it’s me getting older, and feeling like the way I dress should reflect that a little bit. Whatever the reason, though, labels like Twenty Seven Names  just seem, to me, to tie the girly in with the grown up absolutely seamlessly. Pairing sweaters with flouncy full skirts, and making more masculine collared shirts in perfect tiny polka dot prints.

Every single item just looks equal parts pretty and practical, and I’m so happy that they styled the collection with flats, because lately they’re all I’ve been wanting to wear. It helps that each outfit looks easy to layer, making it all perfect for when Canadian Winters make me want to give up on style all together, and just swaddle myself in a blanket for three months. Now, to get my hands on that Crepe Shift Dress…..

Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Larkspur! In this blog we’ll be posting about weekly shop updates to our (soon to come!) vintage Etsy store, craft and DIY projects, as well as other fashion related things that we like! We always love to hear from readers, so don’t be shy to leave comments with your thoughts/suggestions/questions or a link to your own blog/shop. We’re pretty excited about getting our shop started, and we’ll keep you updated as we progress.

Hi there! My name is Alex, I’m 24 and live in Toronto with my sweet little Bichon Frise, Gustave (the light of my life). In addition to being in love with fashion since I can remember, I’m also a professional dancer, which is what brought me to Toronto 5 years ago.

I met Meaghan only 1 year ago, but we instantly clicked. We share the same fashion and lifestyle aesthetic, which brought us to decide to start our own Etsy shop, as well as this Blog. On top of adoring her, I also think she has a great eye for all things vintage and can’t wait to put our minds together and see what beautiful things we can thrift together for all you wonderful people.

My name is Meaghan. I got into blogging and Etsy probably three or four years ago -with the exception of an extended hiatus or two – and have loved every minute of it.

I live with Lola, my Dachshund, in our cozy little tuna can in Toronto. I moved here from Montreal almost two years ago, when I was hired as a flight attendant. This city feels like home now, thanks to friends like Alex.

It won’t take you long to see why I’m so excited to work alongside Alex – she’s a wonderful, funny, creative girl with an absolutely amazing eye for nice things, and we’re ready to put our heads together to offer you guys a great selection of vintage gems!

Now that you know the faces behind Larkspur, we hope to get to know some of you!
