I hear the train a comin’

As the weather warms it has become increasingly difficult to find places to shoot my outfits that are void of people or passer-bys. I’ve lived in 6 different homes in my 7 yrs of living in Toronto and I was wracking my brain of spots I knew of that would have little to no people (since I’m growing tired of the spots I usually shoot at). It’s probably because my best friend Kristen was in town this past weekend (yay!!!) that it got me thinking of the apartment/house we used to live in, and that I was reminded of the train tracks that are next to the house we shared together (yes, we did move into a place that had train tracks RIGHT next to it, and yes, the house did shake because this railway is used often!) It was the perfect spot. I chose not to shoot directly on the tracks because, as I said, they are used often and a few trains zoomed by me while I was shooting, so safety first kids. Anyway, I’m pretty excited to be able to wear my TLO shorts again, and to have no concern about my fingertips falling off while I adjust my camera settings. All is well in my world right now – the sun is shining, the parks are ready for my butt and beers (illegal), and I’ve got some exciting projects coming up. Hope you all had a lovely weekend!

Visit Larkspur at Odd Finds General Store

Larkspur is now officially at Odd Finds General Store. I am so excited to be a part of this collective and to have Larkspur available in the flesh. It’s the sort of progress I envisioned for my shop when I first started it, so it’s quite a nice feeling. I’m not trying to toot my own horn here, but I often need to remind myself to be proud of the things I’ve accomplished, instead of always thinking about what’s next and never allowing myself to be present and happy with exactly this moment. I think a lot of people struggle with this very issue. Sometimes it feels like life is a constant race from one check point to the next, and there is never a moment to be present and acknowledge that things are okay the way they are, here and now. So anyways, I’m working on that. Things are good right now, and who really cares what tomorrow brings. But, if tomorrow brings anything, it should be you, stopping by the shop (tee hee). It’s worth it, in my opinion – a ton of awesome consignors to clothe your bod, and a great selection of teas to tickle your tastebuds.

Maryanne Moodie

Lately I’ve had the itch to redecorate my apartment, and with the chance of a move nearing the end of summer, I’ve been stock piling a list of all the sorts of things I’d like to have adorning my walls and coming across some pretty neat makers along the way. Maryanne Moodie, being one of them. Her woven tapestries are the sort of aesthetic I’m very much interested in. I love her use of pastel colours, particularly the combination of creams and light roses. It would be such a beautiful piece to have and would be so fun to style an area of the room around. If you have not checked out her work before, I highly suggest you do. She’s another one of those people that makes me want to work with my hands more and create something I’d be proud of. And interestingly enough, designlovefest is hosting a workshop with this brilliant lady in June, which gives me serious jealousy pangs for those living in California.

Forgotten treasures

I am in a bit of a rut when it comes to dressing myself as of late. Owning your own shop (ps, online should be back in action in the next little while) generally means you forget to buy things for yourself (at least, for me), so after some time your closet starts to feel boring ’cause everything has been worn to death. A lot of the things I buy for the shop I would wear myself, but not all, either because of fit or it’s just not my style. So while I do get new clothes often, it never really feels like mine and I only get to wear them for a short time. I try not to become attached to something I plan to sell in the shop. All that to say, it’s nice when you go through your own closet and pull something out you haven’t worn in a loooong time, and you are able to look at it with fresh eyes. This trench and these sunglasses are a good example of that. I’ve had bangs since I was 14 yrs old, but I did go through a phase – I think when I started this blog actually – where I was growing them out. I bought these sunglasses around that time. I’ve shared them on the blog a few summers back, but when I saw the images, I hated the way they looked. However, wearing them while I have bangs, I kind of love. They now look right to me, and I’m sure they will get a lot of use this summer. The trench I’ve had for I can’t even remember how many years. I wore it to death when I first got it, and then grew tired of it. Yesterday was the perfect weather for a light jacket, and it caught my eye while I was choosing a coat for the day. I put it on and it just made sense to me. I now rememver why I held onto it for so many years. These are the reasons I will forever be a hoarder of clothing. I hate the idea of getting rid of something and then wishing you had never done so a few months, or even years down the road.

Larkspur Styling

Last Sunday was a fun day, indeed. I spent the afternoon on Toronto Island (Wards Island, more specifically) styling a shoot for the talented and lovely photographer, Danielle Suzanne, who is also the editor behind Zeum Mag, along with the team of Zeum gals, Megan Harper and Lauren Fairservice. Our model was the beauteous Gwen of Peggi Lepage, and she is really just a dream to style. That gal looks good in anything! If you have been following this blog for awhile then you can probably spy a multiple of garments from my personal closet, but I also brought along some stock from Larkspur, and styled some pieces from Dolores Haze SS14 collection. It was really a fanstastic day. We weren’t so sure we would ever see the sun, but she did eventually show her face, at just the right time. I’m pretty excited to see the results, and can’t wait to share them with you!

Big thanks to Danielle, Megan and Lauren for the opportunity, and for letting me do my thing. And to Gwen for being such a sport when the sun was nowhere to be found, and it was chilly as fuck!
