Forgotten treasures

DSC_2738I am in a bit of a rut when it comes to dressing myself as of late. Owning your own shop (ps, online should be back in action in the next little while) generally means you forget to buy things for yourself (at least, for me), so after some time your closet starts to feel boring ’cause everything has been worn to death. A lot of the things I buy for the shop I would wear myself, but not all, either because of fit or it’s just not my style. So while I do get new clothes often, it never really feels like mine and I only get to wear them for a short time. I try not to become attached to something I plan to sell in the shop. All that to say, it’s nice when you go through your own closet and pull something out you haven’t worn in a loooong time, and you are able to look at it with fresh eyes. This trench and these sunglasses are a good example of that. I’ve had bangs since I was 14 yrs old, but I did go through a phase – I think when I started this blog actually – where I was growing them out. I bought these sunglasses around that time. I’ve shared them on the blog a few summers back, but when I saw the images, I hated the way they looked. However, wearing them while I have bangs, I kind of love. They now look right to me, and I’m sure they will get a lot of use this summer. The trench I’ve had for I can’t even remember how many years. I wore it to death when I first got it, and then grew tired of it. Yesterday was the perfect weather for a light jacket, and it caught my eye while I was choosing a coat for the day. I put it on and it just made sense to me. I now rememver why I held onto it for so many years. These are the reasons I will forever be a hoarder of clothing. I hate the idea of getting rid of something and then wishing you had never done so a few months, or even years down the road.

Larkspur Styling

DSC_2570Last Sunday was a fun day, indeed. I spent the afternoon on Toronto Island (Wards Island, more specifically) styling a shoot for the talented and lovely photographer, Danielle Suzanne, who is also the editor behind Zeum Mag, along with the team of Zeum gals, Megan Harper and Lauren Fairservice. Our model was the beauteous Gwen of Peggi Lepage, and she is really just a dream to style. That gal looks good in anything! If you have been following this blog for awhile then you can probably spy a multiple of garments from my personal closet, but I also brought along some stock from Larkspur, and styled some pieces from Dolores Haze SS14 collection. It was really a fanstastic day. We weren’t so sure we would ever see the sun, but she did eventually show her face, at just the right time. I’m pretty excited to see the results, and can’t wait to share them with you!

Big thanks to Danielle, Megan and Lauren for the opportunity, and for letting me do my thing. And to Gwen for being such a sport when the sun was nowhere to be found, and it was chilly as fuck!

Lover of the light

DSC_2494

“Whether we act, or don’t act, voila, miraculously, without exception, things turn out exactly the way they do.”

I read that quote years ago in The Second Book of the Tao, and it is one that has stuck with me over the last 6 years. There is something wonderful about reading a phrase that can resonate so wholly with you, that you just never forget it. Over the years I have found myself floundering between really understanding that sentence, and confused by it’s meaning. But the beautiful thing about Taoism is that if you try too hard to understand, then you understand nothing. I guess all there is to know is that it makes me feel at peace with myself and my life. We can try, or we can not try, either way, things will be the way they are.

TBC Flea

DSC_2256This past weekend I had the pleasure of taking part in my friend Amanda’s first flea market at her vegan bakery, Through Being Cool. This flea was particularly  more fun than previous fleas because it was filled with pals (yay pals!!!) I was vending along side Brendan who run’s the ever popular Explorer’s Press, flowers and garden designs by Lucy of Perrin and Rose, housewares and quirky knick knacks by Addy, art by Matt Darling, and zines by Permanent Sleep Press and Blood of the Young (i’m sure im missing a few people here, and i’m sorry!) It was so great to see the support that Amanda and all the vendors (myself included) received. It’s those types of days that I need to remind myself to step back for a second and really acknowledge how lucky I am, and how truly wonderful human beings can be. I feel so lucky to be surrounded by like-minded individuals who are all working so hard, and so creatively in life.

I didn’t end up taking that many pictures, but I do hope to go by the bakery on a regular ol’ day so I can share her delightful (entirely vegan) baked treats with you all, because Amanda bakes the best goodies! Vegan maple bacon donuts?! I mean, c’mon guys!!!

Simply

DSC_2104Today will be a day of simplicity. Simply being, simply loving and simply acknowledging what we tend to overlook. Simple photos of a simple vintage daisy shift dress, sparkly red shoes and a sweet dog. Sometimes it’s good to over-think (i am guilty of this too often), but some things need no explanation, and need little to no thought at all. We just simply love them, and that’s it. All these things I simply love. They have no great meaning and that’s okay.
