Forgotten treasures

DSC_2738I am in a bit of a rut when it comes to dressing myself as of late. Owning your own shop (ps, online should be back in action in the next little while) generally means you forget to buy things for yourself (at least, for me), so after some time your closet starts to feel boring ’cause everything has been worn to death. A lot of the things I buy for the shop I would wear myself, but not all, either because of fit or it’s just not my style. So while I do get new clothes often, it never really feels like mine and I only get to wear them for a short time. I try not to become attached to something I plan to sell in the shop. All that to say, it’s nice when you go through your own closet and pull something out you haven’t worn in a loooong time, and you are able to look at it with fresh eyes. This trench and these sunglasses are a good example of that. I’ve had bangs since I was 14 yrs old, but I did go through a phase – I think when I started this blog actually – where I was growing them out. I bought these sunglasses around that time. I’ve shared them on the blog a few summers back, but when I saw the images, I hated the way they looked. However, wearing them while I have bangs, I kind of love. They now look right to me, and I’m sure they will get a lot of use this summer. The trench I’ve had for I can’t even remember how many years. I wore it to death when I first got it, and then grew tired of it. Yesterday was the perfect weather for a light jacket, and it caught my eye while I was choosing a coat for the day. I put it on and it just made sense to me. I now rememver why I held onto it for so many years. These are the reasons I will forever be a hoarder of clothing. I hate the idea of getting rid of something and then wishing you had never done so a few months, or even years down the road.

Larkspur Styling

DSC_2570Last Sunday was a fun day, indeed. I spent the afternoon on Toronto Island (Wards Island, more specifically) styling a shoot for the talented and lovely photographer, Danielle Suzanne, who is also the editor behind Zeum Mag, along with the team of Zeum gals, Megan Harper and Lauren Fairservice. Our model was the beauteous Gwen of Peggi Lepage, and she is really just a dream to style. That gal looks good in anything! If you have been following this blog for awhile then you can probably spy a multiple of garments from my personal closet, but I also brought along some stock from Larkspur, and styled some pieces from Dolores Haze SS14 collection. It was really a fanstastic day. We weren’t so sure we would ever see the sun, but she did eventually show her face, at just the right time. I’m pretty excited to see the results, and can’t wait to share them with you!

Big thanks to Danielle, Megan and Lauren for the opportunity, and for letting me do my thing. And to Gwen for being such a sport when the sun was nowhere to be found, and it was chilly as fuck!

The White Pepper Spring 2014

1_399ec3c9-47a5-4cfe-b489-ecc5dec432f7The White Pepper has got me really excited about Spring. So much that I might implode if Winter continues for much longer. I long for days when I can choose an outfit in the morning and know it won’t be covered by layers of cardigans and coats and scarves. The more I get to know myself and my style, the more I realize I much prefer dressing for Spring/Summer. I never get bored with it – it never feels totally repetitive. While I love the idea of dressing for Winter (this doesn’t really include Fall, since it isn’t cold enough to consistently need a coat, and it’s too short a season) I find I become wholly uninspired. Not every dress looks good with tights, I don’t own a cardigan for every outfit, and while I love hats, they can become really annoying when you have to wear them! The White Pepper is really feeding my desire for muted pastels, warm sunny days, flowers (!!!), bare legs and socks, and my always favourite, summery pinafores with collared blouses. What it comes down to is we can be more detailed oriented in the Spring & Summer. I live for details…I think that’s why I love it so much.

Gu Dong Yi

When I saw these images circulating the internet last week I was particularly delighted. It was so refreshing to see a shoot styled entirely with vintage pieces, in a way that I myself don’t think I would have the courage to do. Mixing like two patterns scares me, let alone several. But everything feels so right. The mix and match styling of the whole shoot has a playing-dress-up feel. And model Xiao Wen has such a young, fresh(drop dead gorgeous) face it really brings everything together. Don’t get me wrong, there is a sense of sophistication here, but there is a definite innocent and light-hearted feel to the whole.

The shoot brings me back to my childhood of rummaging through my closet putting on any and all of my favorite things – Elmo t-shirt, tiered ruffly skirt, mismatched socks and my trusty wooden spoon used as a microphone to perform Madonna songs for my family.
