Outfit: Up Tha Punx

Larkspur Vintage | Outfit: Up Tha PunxLarkspur Vintage | Outfit: Up Tha PunxI’ve owned this faux leather jacket for about 7 years now. I used to wear it religiously, but when my style took a more soft turn, it ended up in the back of my closet (or packed in a box, rather). I’ve never been able to get rid of it though, just the same as I have never been able to get rid of my jean vest that I had cut the sleeves off of and then had my boyfriend at the time draw on the back of. They are both sentimental pieces and the only remaining items from my punk/goth days. I knew that even if I wasn’t really wearing this jacket, I would want to hold onto it. I’m telling you, finding a moto jacket like this was not easy, and it still feels just as relevant as it did back then, so I’m glad it has stayed with me all these years. I can’t say I’ll be pulling it out of my closet a ton this Fall, because it does feel very much like my former self, that of which I don’t really identify with anymore, but it was nice to bring one of my more sentimental pieces out of the darkness and share it with you guys.

Outfit: Vivienne

Larkspur Vintage | Outfit: VivienneLarkspur Vintage | Outfit: VivienneI feel like a broken record apologizing for my absence from this space the last few weeks, but with everything going on I’ve decided to cut myself some slack and update when I can and just be fine with that – life will find some form of normalcy in due time.

The weather has cooled down quite a fair bit here in Toronto, so breaking out velvet in the form of the Vivienne dress  by ACT THREE. (which you can find in store and online at Victoire) did not feel too premature on this particular day. Velvet and lace are such a rich and romantic combination, unlikely to ever go wrong when paired together, and sure to make for the perfect cool weather outfit.

Outfit: Other People’s Clothes

Larkspur Vintage | Outfit: Other People's ClothesLarkspur Vintage | Outfit: Other People's ClothesSince I haven’t really been living at home lately (see this post if you don’t understand), I don’t have many of my own clothes to style outfits with. It’s been a whole lot of wearing the same few articles of clothing I have with me or borrowing Meaghan’s clothes (thnx Meg!) because I have been staying at her place while she is visiting our pal Kira in Chicago. With that being the case, this outfit feels very out of the norm for me. It consists of Meaghan’s hat and boots which I think are really great, but pretty unusual for me. The whole thing is a bit western, or like something you could wear hiking (if you don’t mind hiking in a dress), which I like, but again, not my usual cutesy, un-utilitarian styling I normally throw together. I will say, however, it was nice to give the Cybille dress by ACT THREE Apparel a different spin. You guys might remember I styled their first lookbook (and second, but you can’t see that yet!), which was very 60s french new wave, Anna Karina vibes. This seems totally different from that, and I was pretty happy to be able to share a different way to style one of Sarah’s amazing dresses (which you can now find online/in store at Victoire and this particular dress in store at Coal Miner’s Daughter). Please do check out her dresses; I feel so lucky to be able to work closely with such an amazing label.

Outfit: Rekindle

Larkspur Vintage | Outfit: RekindleLarkspur Vintage | Outfit: RekindleIt had been ages since I had worn this dress. It used to be an absolute favourite of mine, but I think I wore it death and grew rather tired of it over time. However, something about it called to me the other day, and after slipping back into it, I remembered why I loved it so…and even more now with my short hair. It’s interesting how something as simple as a haircut can bring new life to clothes collecting dust in your closet. And this is the very reason I have so much trouble parting ways with my clothes. It is said that if you haven’t worn something in a year you should probably let it go, but I have to disagree. Sometimes you just need a break; a little time to find what once was. If I let go every piece of clothing I hadn’t worn in a year, well I’d have a whole lot of clothing regrets. This is not to say I don’t purge myself of the clothes that really are not ever going to be worn, but I choose not to hold myself to the rule above because some pieces are just more special than others and deserve a real chance to prove themselves once again (and clearly I am fucking over dramatic when it comes to clothes).

What about you guys? Are you frequent purgers? Hoarders of a sort, like me?

Pastel Dress Party: Three Ways To Wear A Tutu

Larkspur Vintage | 3 Ways To Wear A TutuTutus have been in my life since I was a wee one, and my two favourite tutus have always been pancake tutus and romantic tutus. Obviously pancake tutus are not at all practical for everyday life (a hazard, really), but romantic tutus…well they can most certainly be worn everyday. For years I wore them on stage during ballet performances, and then during my goth years for what I like to call my “Tim Burton Goth” aesthetic, but it has been ages since then. So, I was pretty darn excited to receive this blush Kimmy skirt from Pastel Dress Party to add a little of my old self into my present wardrobe. Unless you are a little outspoken in dress, tutus can be a scary thing to wear, so I thought I’d share three ways to wear a tutu, just switching up the top, shoes and lip colour (and hair), to give you options for a casual look, a night time look and a party look.

Casual: To give this skirt a dressed down look I paired it with a colourful floral t-shirt, saddle shoes (which could easily be swapped for sneakers) and I opted for no lipstick so it didn’t feel overtop and much more appropriate for daytime-lets get some ice cream-wear.

Night: For those evenings that you aren’t necessarily going to a fancy party but still want to look put together for a night out with pals, this would be an excellent outfit to try. I paired the tutu with a casual peter pan collar shirt, that looks quite sweet but is not at all fancy, a pair of black flats – because lets be real, if you are dancing with your friends all night, no one wants sore feet – a pink lip and a pony tail so you don’t have to worry about a rats nest on your head from said dancing mentioned above.

Party: A formal event or party would be the obvious choice for a tutu, so this is likely the easiest outfit to try. I chose my swiss dot blouse with fluttery cap sleeves for a bit of elegance, sparkly red heels for an otherwise muted colour palette and a dainty white ribbon tied into a bow around the neck to add a sexy Parisian quality to the look. Top all that off with a matching red lip and you are looking like a Disney Princess babe, but better.
Larkspur Vintage | 3 Ways To Wear A TutuLarkspur Vintage | 3 Ways To Wear A TutuBut really, probably the most important thing to do with a tutu is to twirl in it and watch it float around…you don’t have to be a ballerina to appreciate the beauty and fun of a truly well made and gorgeous tutu…which means I’m pretty excited to be able to offer you guys 20% off the Kimmy Skirt with coupon code LARKSPUR at checkout ❤ Now we can all be pastel ballerinas together!
