Fruits and Veggies by The Loved One

TLO

If you know me personally, you probably know I have a wee thing for The Loved One. At this point I own two pairs of Floral Remake Shorts (in fact I’m wearing the light pair right now), One Shocking Moment Bra and Bow Tie in black. So, you can understand my excitement when the first of their monthly look books entitled “Fruits and Veggies” was released. TLO’s aesthetic whispers to me in sweet sweet nothings. I cannot ever get enough of it. If ever there was a shop who picked the perfect photographers, most interesting models and delightfully quirky vintage, this would be it (in my opinion).  Put those hats on ma tête and those frocks on my body and i will skip away like a happy little school girl grandma.

Ziegfield Follies

ziegfieldIf I could go back in time, well there would be a lot of things I would like to do, but one of them would definitely be performing as a Ziegfield Follies girl. Probably for obvious reasons this appeals to me. One, being the dancing and entertaining, and two, the costuming! How amazing would it be to get to wear these beautiful babies!? Intricate craftsmanship like this always takes my breath away. Someone spent lengthy periods hand sewing sequined appliques for costumes and creating incredible bead work, that I can only imagine in this time period (1907-1931) would take hours upon hours. And that doesn’t even touch upon the pattern making and sewing of the costumes themselves. From what I know about sewing tutus (watching my mom sew me a bajillion of them growing up) it truly takes time and patience. Whether it be a romantic, classical or platter tutu, they all take a great deal of skill. In this case, practice truly does make perfect. I think my mother had her tutu skills down pat by the time I left my dance studio and moved to this big ol’ city.

There are so many things I would love to teach myself to do. Bead work and crafting appliques is one that really stands out in my mind. Even if I would have nowhere to wear these things, even if they just hung on my walls, I imagine it would feel incredibly gratifying.

If you have never heard of Ziegfield Follies, you should check em out. It’s worth a gander and a few good reads. And maybe even check out the movie Ziegfield Follies. It’s full of the very best when musical theater was at it’s prime! Fred Astaire!

Jean Shrimpton

jean shrimpton 8There’s probably too many women in the 60’s that I’m like “hey gimme that face!” (and wardrobe, and hairstyle, and make-up, and okay okay your life also).  Jean Shrimpton would be one of those women. I think no explanation is needed really. She’s a top notch babe, and her wardrobe, whether it was chosen for her or not, is like my dream.

Ballad of Magazine

ballad6 This 1960’s Brigitte Bardot-inspired editorial shot by Micaela Hoo, for the latest edition of Ballad Of Magazine – “Summer of ’63” Issue is for lack of better words (and tired brain), adorable and dreamy. Model Tate Moore looks like a little china doll in her own right, and styling/hair & makeup by Erin and Mich adds to this whole “dollhouse” vibe I am feeling. It’s like Barbie came to life and is hanging out in The Oakland Hills at the historic Claremont Resort and Hotel. All the ladies who were involved in this shoot work pretty magically together, and I’d love to see more by them!

Matt Skuza as Utah

10

Matt Skuza has been a dear friend of mine for many years (dating back to the good ol’ Ottawa goth days). And I have been enchanted by his photography for just as long. Matt does all of his art under the name Utah. He originally began with focus on photography, and then dove into the world of painting.

The thing that gets me about Matt’s photography is that it feels real, because most of the time, it is. His subjects are just living and breathing, and he captures those very moments, making you see beauty in simplicity. His cityscapes and landscapes feel much the same. You could walk by a street or building everyday and barely even see it, but Matt will see something special, or maybe not so special, and capture that moment, as it is, astonishing or mundane, I don’t believe there is any difference to him. And that’s why he is so endearing. His art and his life parallel each other so much, that it’s hard to find something to dislike because it is so genuine.

Matt currently resides in Vancouver, BC. If you live in the area, definitely keep an eye out for any shows he’s putting on or participating in. His art won’t disappoint you, and he’s also an incredibly interesting person to talk to if you love having deep convos about life.
