Dufferin Grove

DSC_0676

This weekend was quiet (like every other weekend since Toronto froze over). We met our friend Lindsay for Ethiopian food and pitchers of beer on Saturday evening, and then all started dozing off watching the Hunger Games at Alex’s.

Today was for house work and dog walking, and a little bit of red wine before bed.

We did manage to fit some thrifting into the mix, and found some items we’re pretty excited to list in the coming weeks (including a few Spring things!). While we were out, we figured we’d take some photos for the blog, since it’s hard to be motivated to get out of the house once we’re warm and cozy. So, we stopped at Dufferin Grove, a park right by where each of us used to live before we lived in Parkdale. It’s a lot nicer when there isn’t construction all around….you’ll have to excuse the beautiful neon orange cones and fences …

We hope you had a lovely weekend!

Home Sweet Home / Lindsay

DSC_0632

I have always loved Lindsay and Duncan’s apartment. It feels like you walked into an eccentric grandmother’s home, full of unique antique and found objects. It’s cluttered in the most organized way, which I think very few people know how to pull off. It has almost an eerie feel to it, what with animal skulls and even a scythe (!!!), while also being a place where you can curl up under a blanket and feel at home. With every turn of your head there is something fun to look at, which I think really represents these two. I’m telling you, these two have an eye for finding the best things and decorating in a way that cannot be taught.

Bridges and Balloons

Joanna+Newsom+Joanna

I think I first started listening to Joanna Newsom when I was 14 years old. I spent a lot of time at the home of a close friend who I took dance lessons with. She had an older sister that, at the time, I thought was the coolest person around. Not to mention I had a secret crush (maybe not so secret) on her boyfriend. I was introduced to a lot of different music at this time because my friend would play me all the music her older sister listened to. Being dancers, we were obsessed with new music. I didn’t quite get Joanna Newsom at first. Her voice sounded odd to me. But with time I couldn’t stop coming back to her. There was a fairy-like quality to her voice, that was so genuine to me.  She made playing a harp seem very appealing, and not an instrument that an old eccentric woman would play alone in her boudoir (although, I’d probably find that cool now). As I got older and my fashion sense changed from bullet belts and platform boots and Marilyn Manson to a not-so-harsh vintage feel, I started to also just love her look. The way she dresses is much like the sound of her voice – like a frolicking nymph in a perfect dress, hiding in the depths of a mystical woods, and you’re always trying to catch a glimpse of her to prove that she is actually real (you really need to hear her voice if this doesn’t make sense to you). Her style seems effortless because it pretty much consists of a vintage dress, but some of the most interesting ones I have seen. This appeals to me because I have an affinity to unique vintage dresses, all from different eras, but all carrying a special quality that gives some consistency to my closet.

If you like pretty girls, in pretty dresses with pretty voices, dating super funny guys, then you will adore Joanna Newsom.

Lazy Weekend

2013-01-05_1357406557

It’s the middle of Winter, and it’s been consistently quiet around here. I’m not complaining, because any excuse for me to stay in with my dog(s!!!) and a book is alright with me – but it doesn’t make for very exciting blogposts… – so you’ll have to forgive this mash-up of random iphone pictures.

This weekend was especially wonderful because my sister Allie was visiting – and I adopted another dog!

Without further ado – let me introduce to you, the new addition to my (and the Larkspur) family – Frankie! She’s a nervous little thing, who loves to cuddle more than any dog I’ve ever met. She’s heart-breakingly sweet, and her perfect little face will be making lots of cameos on this blog. Lola is still getting used to the idea of having a sister, she likes her, but she’s a little protective of her toys and treats…but they cuddle at night, and I know they’re going to be best friends.

This weekend, my sister and I went to see the movie The Quartet (we’re a family of crazy Maggie Smith fans) and baked some dessert, and made really delicious pasta for dinner. We went to meet our aunt for brunch, and she graced us with a million wonderful stories about her and our Mom when they were in high school. But mostly, we sat around laughing and talking and looking at old pictures, and getting really giddy about the fact that our cousin just announced he is going to be a father for the first time! It was a perfect weekend – and I would have been a lot sadder seeing her off if it weren’t for the cottage weekend we have planned with our family in two weeks!
