Marilyn Monroe Moments

DSC_3832This dress was a mistake for weather as humid and windy as it was yesterday. When I bought this dress I specifically thought it would be a nice summery dress because of how light-weight and airy it feels, but I was wrong. I always forget Toronto doesn’t really get dry heat. It’s a sticky, humid, ‘sweat between your butt cheeks’ type heat that can only really be fought by leaving as much skin exposed as possible (danger to fare-skinned folk). I was indeed correct about how light-weight it is though. It’s the type of light-weight that if there is any gust of wind, a few people are going to get a flash of your buns, so it was really not ideal for me to wear this dress while taking photos so close to the beach. Think of the infamous Marilyn Monroe ‘Seven Year Itch’ scene, but way less sexy and charming. Needless to say, I was panicked to get home after taking these photos. I spent the remainder of this day in a lace short-sleeve button up and high waisted denim shorts (and no socks! it’s amazing how much warmer you feel with socks on). I do love this dress though. I’m a huge fan of stripes (typical.), but this may very well be the only striped item I own these days. In my goth days I rocked a pair of Beetlejuice pants, but they are no more, and may they rest in peace.

Behind the Scenes / Gerald, Gwen, Leesa and Larkspur

DSC_3538A couple weekends back I had the pleasure of working with Gerald again. I styled two shoots in one day, using Larkspur garb, as well as my own personal collection. I got to dress up the always lovely Gwenwho I have styled before. I worked along side hairstylist/makeup artist, Leesa – who I have also worked with before – to turn Gwen into an enchanting woodland goddess. This time I was not modelling myself, so I helped out behind the scenes in between putting outfits together. It was a long day, but magical and full of laughs. It’s nice getting to work with a model you have already met. Gwen is a little firecracker and I sort of fell even more in love with her. I feel a kinship to her goofy silly vibes. As always, it was a pleasure working with Gerald and Leesa, they are both such kind, lovely people. There are definitely worse ways I could have spent a day. I promise promise once any of the three (well four, if we include the one I did with Danielle) shoots I have worked on are released, you guys will be the first to know!DSC_3550DSC_3557DSC_3558DSC_3560DSC_3561DSC_3568DSC_3569DSC_3575DSC_3577DSC_3583DSC_3589DSC_3602DSC_3603

Shop Update (!!!)

DSC_36651. Floral Longsleeve Collared Button-up Blouse (M)

Well it has been a long while since I updated the shop, but I spent all week adding new items, so here we are! I’m hoping to get back to my old routine and get the shop back to what is was, in all it’s colorful glory. As usual, we have florals, collars and high waists. Pop by the shop today to take a gander, maybe something will catch your eye.

Constant Resurrections / Gerald Larocque

Gerald-Larocque6Had I never started this blog or selling vintage clothing, I probably would have never met Gerald Larocque, which would have been a crying shame because it’s not often you get to meet and befriend such a brilliant person. I’ve now worked on three shoots (two in one day!) with him, which I feel lucky even saying. Gerald’s photography is mostly focused around a conceptualized, surrealistic nature, in conjunction with fashion, leaving you with photographs that make you wonder “How?!” But it doesn’t end there, his editorial work holds feelings of romance and dreamy imagery that he captures on both analog and digital. His process is one I very much admire. I think one of the beautiful things about his work is that he can visualize a concept and bring it to life in what I can only assume is exactly how he saw it in his head. This is no easy feat. It’s been quite interesting for me to be a part of someone’s artistic vision, and help turn it into something tangible. This particular series, ‘Constant Resurrections’, is one of my favourites. It’s eerie in just the right way, thought provoking, and visually stunning.

If you’d like to see more of Gerald’s work, you can find it here.
And you can follow him on twitter, instagram and FB

Houndstooth, and other things

DSC_3723I have not had a free weekend in what seems like weeks. Mind you, I normally have Sundays free for whatever I like, but I consider a true free-of-work weekend when I have both Saturday and Sunday off. I cannot complain though, I spent most of Saturday styling another shoot for Gerald, which really doesn’t feel like work at all, but rather something that is fun and gets my creative juices flowing. The other half of the weekend was for blog and shop affairs. I’ll be honest, I’ve been feeling pretty overwhelmed with finding the time to really give my online shop the love and care it desperately needs – it’s down to the bare bones at this point. But I spent a few hours on Sunday photographing items to list all through the week and I’m hoping I can keep up with this and get back to where we were before I moved a huge amount of stock over to Odd Finds General Store and became busier than ever. I’ve also been feeling sort of uninspired with my writing recently, so we’ll just leave it at that for today.

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend!
