Winter Winds

DSC_0623

Living in a province where it’s cold the majority of the year, having a good coat is necessary. Since I wear a coat probably 8 months of the year, I find myself always searching for new ones because it can get rather boring wearing the same old coat everyday forever and always. When I found this one at the Toronto Vintage Clothing Show I knew it had to be mine. It was the coat I was looking for. Incredibly warm, huge pockets, big collar, and in a lovely cream colour that goes with pretty much everything in my wardrobe. It’s exciting to find a vintage coat that actually fits. I’ve been lucky a few times now, but I’m not one those people that consistently finds beautiful vintage coats while thrifting. There are just too many stylish thrifters in Toronto, so you know how that goes.

Samantha Pleet SS14 – Arcadia

I had been anticipating Samantha Pleet SS14 collection entitled Arcadia for quite some time now. I truly mean this! (Instagram can be a curse when it reveals such exciting happenings and then you must play the waiting game). She may be my favorite designer out there at the moment, for reasons that go beyond aesthetic appeal. She is a true artist in all that she does. Her collections consistently transcend time and place (and trend). She is unequivocally her own, and there is nothing I love more.

The short film “Arcadia” and this season’s collection was inspired by the journals of Charles Darwin during his journeys to Tiera Del Fuego, and imagery from Gauguin and Rousseau. The film follows a heroine explorer who happens upon a mythical island-paradise and comes to find her own freedom through the island’s inhabitants – embodying liberation, sensual pleasure, nature and the feminine divine (sign me up!). This season she is back with her signature hand drawn prints and silhouettes that would make any gal look ravishing. And in my case, possibly put my bank account in the negatives just to acquire one piece. You can feel the care and thought she puts into each and every piece, and I just don’t think you can find better garments when love is involved in the process.

With grace in your heart, and flowers in your hair

To be honest, I don’t have much planned for this summer (I’m a big ol’ snooze). With Matt’s job, it’s difficult for us to plan a trip together. So I have booked only 1 week off from work thus far, and it may just turn out out to be a staycation, which, I am okay with, and which Gus will be overjoyed about. I’m leaving one week of vacation for a later time when maybe, just maybe, we can plan a trip somewhere together. Europe….I’m looking at you.
However, Meg, me and some of our other pals do plan to rent a cottage for a weekend (if all our schedules permit). I made a few pretend outfits that would be fun to bring to a cottage, for a little beachy time, a little small town stroll time, some woodsy time, and just plain lounging time. Maybe these outfits are a bit fancy for a cottage, and shoes will probably not even exist on me feets. But if you know me, I pretty much live in dresses, and I can’t help myself when I find cute virtual apparel to make fun virtual “ya, you wish!” outfits.

Pretend Outfits

The weather is…warm?! Rainy, but relatively warm, and this got my brain dreaming up outfits that were jacket-less and sweater-less and ignorant of the reality that is my wallet.  I go through phases of obsessing over certain types of clothing (sleepwear!!!), and right now I’m obsessing over items to go on me noggin (no, not you beret, goodbye, I don’t want to see you again for a long time!). Having long hair makes wearing things on your head fun! When I had short hair, everything felt overwhelming on my skull, but no more!

Samantha Pleet SS’13

samantha pleet ss13

There has been a lot of internet buzz on Samantha Pleet over the last several days, with sneak peeks of what’s to come in her A/W ’13 collection. I’m trying now to stick with the upcoming season (although still very late) and share Samantha Pleet’s SS’13 collection entitled “The Sands of Time”. The Myth dress could be my favourite piece. The fabric chosen is so very pleasing to the eyes and I love the loose fit. It could be my ideal dress for the warm weather, although I tend to say that about a lot of dresses (mmm dresses). The airy subtle colour palette of this collection is what draws me in the most. There is something mythic and ancient about Samantha’s designs that make the simple silhouettes of the garments stand out from any other collection I have seen. I feel like Cleopatra could be wearing any one of these pieces, floating across the desert sands. With each season she gets better and better and I now always look forward to seeing what new and wonderful garments she has created that I can ogle over.
